ChooseMyPlate.gov states that fruits and vegetables have powerful nutritive properties due to their high amounts of essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients. For example, the healthy dose of dietary fiber found in most fruits and veggies can encourage weight loss or healthy weight maintenance. The antioxidants, vitamins and minerals present in the foods also have the potential to reduce risks of serious health conditions including kidney stones, heart attack, diabetes, cancer, stroke and bone loss.
However, a more varied diet is necessary to get the most profound health benefits and fulfill all nutritional needs. Your body needs fat and protein for proper body function, but most vegetables and fruits provide very little of either. Thus, restricting your diet to just those foods for weeks at a time is likely to result in nutrient deficiencies and may also cause fatigue, dizziness, weakness or strong cravings.
Vegetables and fruits tend to have low energy density levels, which means they have few calories and fat per serving but high amounts of fiber and water. As a result, you can eat them in large amounts and still end up consuming fewer calories than you might eat at a normal meal. Your daily calorie intake is likely to drop when eating just vegetables and fruits, but it may cause you to lose weight at a pace faster than health experts recommend. If you lose more than 2 lbs. per week, for example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes you are less likely to keep the weight off than if you dropped it more gradually.
A safer and healthier alternative to eating only veggies and fruits is to increase your daily servings of those foods while still eating a low-calorie array of foods from all major groups, including whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein. The National Institutes of Health recommends that strategy for weight loss, along with increasing your daily physical activity.
Before you begin a restrictive diet plan, speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian, especially if you struggle with any chronic health conditions. If you do choose to eat only fruits and veggies for any length of time and begin to feel sick or experience any physical discomfort, call your physician.

I highly recommend South Beach diet. I have been on it for a month and it is great. Definitely something you can do for the rest of your life. It's not a fad diet. The first 2 weeks are tough - no bad carbs (potato, rice, pasta) no sweets, no fruit, no alcohol. But the cravings will go away. and the weight will come off. You eat lots of vegetables, grilled meats, there is dessert, eggs for breakfast, healthy snacks.

Which can raise your blood sugar, then cause a subsequent drop, which leads to more sugar cravings, it's called "reactive Hypoglycemia". Get the South Beach diet book, seriously. I know people will say it's a fad diet, but it's all about normalizing your blood sugar and getting rid of those cravings and it really works. The first phase is one where you cut out sugar, breads and pastas and fruit. This lasts for 2 weeks. But you get to eat tons of good carbs, like vegetables. If you make it through the first couple of days, you'll be amazed. The cravings really go away, and I'm telling you this as someone who used to eat choclate cake for breakfast!!!
